FAQs For Septic Service

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

1) How often should I pump my tank?

State and local regulations mandate that your septic tank be pumped at least once every 5 years. However, if your system experiences higher usage, it’s recommended to pump it every 3 years to ensure optimal performance.

2) What are the signs that my septic system could be failing?

Signs of septic system failure include slow drains, foul odors around the property, drain backups, pooling water near the septic tank or drain field, unusually lush grass growth above the system, and gurgling sounds from the drains

3) What are common causes of septic system failure?

Common causes of system failure include clogged septic lines, inadequate maintenance, excessive water use, disposal of non-biodegradable products, poor system design, heavy rainfall or flooding, and system aging.

4) How do I maintain my septic system?

Regularly pump the septic tank, avoid overloading the system with excessive water usage, and ensure proper waste disposal by refraining from flushing non-biodegradable items and disposing of grease correctly. Inspect and clean the effluent filter as needed and protect the drain field by keeping the area clear of heavy vehicles, construction, and invasive plants or trees. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can disrupt the system’s function and maintain detailed records of all maintenance and servicing.

5) How often should effluent filters be cleaned

Effluent filters should be cleaned annually to bi-annually, depending on system usage.

6) How often does my flow diversion valve need to be turned?

The general recommendation is to adjust the valve annually, though more frequent adjustments may be needed with higher usage.
